Welcoming Sally-Ann Denby: A Compassionate and Experienced Voice in Mental Health Law Support

At John Black Solicitors, we take pride in building a team that not only brings expertise and professionalism but also compassion, understanding, and lived experience. We’re delighted to introduce Sally-Ann Denby, who has joined us as an administrative assistant on our mental health law team.

With over 15 years of experience across the private, NHS, and specialist mental health sectors, Sally-Ann brings a unique depth of knowledge and client-centred empathy to her new role.

About Sally-Ann: From Hospital Halls to Legal Support

Sally-Ann’s career began humbly in a part-time administrative role at a private hospital, with little initial knowledge of Mental Health Law. But her drive to understand and improve services quickly led her into more senior roles, including department supervision, staff training, and collaborations with multidisciplinary teams, social services, and tribunal representatives.

Throughout her career, Sally-Ann has worn many hats:

  • Support Worker

  • Occupational Therapy Assistant

  • Hospital Governance Contributor

  • Non-Clinical Manager

This blend of administrative and hands-on clinical support roles has given her a rare, holistic understanding of how hospitals operate and why certain processes matter, insights that now benefit the clients of John Black Solicitors.

I understand how hospitals are structured and the reasons for the processes they have,” she explains.

Her Role at John Black Solicitors

As an Administrative Assistant, Sally-Ann plays a crucial role in supporting clients through the legal process, especially during times that may feel overwhelming or emotionally charged. She offers a reassuring presence and values the opportunity to get to know each client personally.

I enjoy meeting with clients, learning about what is important to them and discussing their instructions,” she shares.

Her role bridges the gap between administrative precision and human connection, making her an invaluable asset to both the firm and the people we support.

Why Sally-Ann Chose John Black Solicitors

Sally-Ann had long observed the dedication of the John Black Solicitors team from a professional distance. Having seen them represent patients over the years, she was impressed by their honesty, approachability, and client-first ethos.

They are respected, knowledgeable, and committed to achieving the best outcomes for their clients. I’m very proud to now be supporting such a team,” she says.

Advocacy at Heart: Protecting Patients’ Rights

Sally-Ann’s previous work as a Safeguarding Training Lead has instilled in her a firm commitment to patients’ rights, particularly for individuals with autism, learning disabilities, or those navigating complex care systems.

Empowering people to be involved in their own care and treatment decisions is a key component to reaching positive outcomes,” she notes

Her autism awareness and safeguarding knowledge reinforce the firm’s ongoing commitment to inclusive and person-centred legal support.

Looking Ahead: A Future Mental Health Advocate

Sally-Ann is passionate about continuous professional development. With a keen interest in legislation changes, case law updates, and mental health policy evolution, she aspires to become a qualified Mental Health Advocate in the near future, further expanding her impact in the field.

Legal Sector Insights: Meeting the Moment

Drawing on her experience in healthcare, Sally-Ann foresees a growing need for legal practices to respond to increasing demand in mental health services and an evolving policy landscape.

Multidisciplinary collaboration will be essential. Practices like ours must remain adaptable and informed to deliver effective support,” she advises.

Life Beyond the Office: Persian Food and Furry Friends

When she’s not immersed in case files and client interactions, Sally-Ann is a qualified holistic and beauty therapist who finds joy in the small things, like cooking Persian cuisine, learning Farsi, and spending time with her two dogs and two stepchildren. Her warmth, curiosity, and family-oriented nature add a lovely human dimension to her professional excellence.

A Warm Welcome to Sally-Ann

We’re thrilled to welcome Sally-Ann Denby to the team. Her vast experience, compassionate nature, and drive to advocate for clients’ rights make her an incredible addition to the Mental Health Law team at John Black Solicitors.

Whether she’s offering calm and clarity to clients or championing better standards behind the scenes, Sally-Ann represents everything we value in our people: dedication, empathy, and excellence.
