Emma Steyn and Harry Parsons Begin Solicitor Training at John Black Solicitors

We are delighted to share that Emma Steyn and Harry Parsons have now started their solicitor training with the firm. It is a significant achievement for both Emma and Harry, and a proud moment for everyone at John Black Solicitors.

Emma Steyn: Building Confidence Through Client Care
Emma Steyn, who joined the firm as a Paralegal Assistant, has now begun her journey as a Trainee Solicitor.
For Emma, the opportunity marks an exciting next step towards becoming fully qualified. She is looking forward to taking on more responsibility in the future and continuing to build her confidence as she develops her own skills and experience.
Reflecting on what this opportunity means to her, Emma said:
“I was excited and I’m glad to have the opportunity to be taking the next steps to being fully qualified, as well as taking on more responsibilities and an individual case load in the future.”
Emma’s experience within the Magistrates department has been particularly important in shaping her decision to continue her legal training. The fast-paced nature of the work has allowed her to develop key qualities that are essential for any solicitor, including problem solving, adaptability and the ability to think on her feet.
Above all, it is client care that has made the greatest impression on Emma.
She explained that speaking with clients and connecting with the people directly affected by the justice system has helped confirm that this is the right path for her. In criminal defence work, the legal process can feel daunting and deeply personal. Emma’s commitment to helping clients feel listened to, supported and understood is a valuable quality as she begins this next stage.
Emma is also looking forward to developing her advocacy skills and learning more about the wider areas of work at John Black Solicitors, including Mental Health Law and Prison Law.
Harry Parsons: Taking the Next Step in Criminal Defence
Harry Parsons has also started his training to become a solicitor, having worked with the firm as a Crown Court Paralegal.
For Harry, this is a milestone he has been working towards for many years.
He said:
“I have wanted to be a solicitor for many years, and I am so happy that it is finally going to be a reality.”
Since joining John Black Solicitors, Harry has seen first-hand the impact that dedicated legal representation can have in criminal law. That experience has strengthened his desire to defend the rights of those who need support, advice and representation.
Harry has already gained valuable experience through attending hearings, conferences and prison visits. These moments have helped prepare him for the next stage of his career, giving him insight into the practical realities of criminal defence work and the importance of clear, dependable client support.
He also credits the people around him for helping him feel ready for this opportunity.

As part of his training, Harry is looking forward to gaining exposure to other areas of law, particularly Mental Health Law. He is also excited to complete his exams and experience different seats as his legal knowledge continues to grow.
Looking ahead, Harry hopes to become a solicitor who is approachable, dependable and trusted by both clients and colleagues. His ambition is not only to qualify, but to build a body of work he can look back on with pride.
